Occupying myself with painting in watercolours when faced with complex mechanical problem solving.
Perhaps a bit like heading off for a relaxing and enjoyable stroll in the opposite direction to the goal.
Reflections along the way allow fluid manifestations of flight and its expression through colour and flow.
From out of this reprieve solutions form.
The Ancient South Downs Way,
dragonflies and butterflies abound.
we walk beneath the hot summer sun.
I am drawn towards a thing, I walk over and pick this up.
Curious, I feel the metal object’s weight as I change hands and alter my grip.
We shelter beneath a small tree with plump buds and small flowers, I love this tree and the respite from the stifling heat it gives us.
In the studio I continue to feel this thing.
Uncovering a bright metal core, a jewel from out of the rough.
I refer to the nature studies of Da Vinci.
Then place small flowers in a vase on the workbench.
Drawings clarify what I feel beneath the surface,
Digging deep whilst retaining the authentic object nature,
removing without detracting.
I am negotiating the terms to engage,
my part in the physical conversation through this object emerges.
The queen of a chess game,
a piece not to lose,
this one was found (or perhaps reclaimed).
The pole leads, I lead.
The pole follows, I follow.
The pole knows, I know.
The pole feels movement through the pole,
building and dissipating,
growing and sinking,
advancing and reverting.
I can be the decision of this pole,
being listened to.
the movement in feeling is strange,
the pole is me
I am the pole.
In front of the audience
as i make this place
a stage like any place
all of us
this is ours
differences celebrated in meaningless enjoyment
a show of all of us together
all of us love a fool in front of us
from out of our very midst
puppets given life for the breathing
our collective great big funny smelly arse!
