The Ancient South Downs Way, dragonflies and butterflies abound. we walk beneath the hot summer sun. I am drawn towards a thing, I walk over and pick this up. Curious, I feel the metal object’s weight as I change hands and alter my grip. We shelter beneath a small tree with plump buds and small flowers, I love this tree and the respite from the stifling heat it gives us. In the studio I continue to feel this thing. Uncovering a bright metal core, a jewel from out of the rough. I refer to the nature studies of Da Vinci. Then place small flowers in a vase on the workbench. Drawings clarify what I feel beneath the surface, form, material, substance. Digging deep whilst retaining the authentic object nature, removing without detracting. I am negotiating the terms to engage, my part in the physical conversation through this object emerges. A flower.
The queen of a chess game, a piece not to lose, this one was found (or perhaps reclaimed).
