Butterfly Prototype #5 (2016)
Circus is 21 An exhibition of 21 artist’s works, Circus Gallery, Marylebone High Street, London. 16 January - 11 April 2019 This piece is a study of the form and movement of the flight of the butterfly, the culmination of two years study and observation. It marks a significant point within the three year long creative process culminating in Puppet Flutter/Flight is a Waltz (2017) and leading onto the development of Dragonfly Imago which will be the focal point of a solo show at Circus Gallery in May 2019. It is a significant part of a metamorphosis in my creative practice which was put into full swing in 2014 on meeting Dominic Harris and initiating our collaborative butterfly project. Previous to 2014 my puppet design and making was mainly centred on the creation of puppets in direct response to a theatrical production requirement. I had a tremendous desire to be free to immerse myself within a specific movement and form study for a period of time sufficient to uncover intricacies and detail not possible within the short to medium timeframe common in theatre production. As with any fundamental alteration in direction it carried a huge degree of risk and was in many ways a leap into the unknown. The beautiful, marvellous, wonderful unknown! I want to thank those who have been such a support to me through this often-times tempestuous process; Rahel for continuously being there Dominic, a creative visionary Mark, such a friend Tim and Lee, my closest creative shoulders to lean on My amazing family who are geographically far but so close Slavka, a kindred creative spirit Lynda, incredible introductions and connections Alex, capturing on camera Pete for simply being! and plenty more of you A big thanks to Dilys, Eloise and Bonnie at Circus for including Butterfly Prototype #5 in the Circus is 21 exhibition and collaborating with me on the future presentation of the Dragonfly Imago piece at Circus Gallery in May 2019.
